The value of a pelvic floor PT postpartum

Long before I got pregnant I heard about the wonders of pelvic floor PT. In recent years I started hearing more about “deep core” and the importance of breath work from people like Madeline Custer with MadelineMoves.

When I mentioned postpartum tailbone pain to a friend she encouraged me to see a pelvic floor PT. At the time, I was convinced my pain was a result of the bone and not muscular so I thanked her and moved on. I wish I hadn’t.

Fast forward several weeks and I finally went to a pelvic floor PT. She did an internal and external examine and found significant tightness in most of the muscles that make up my pelvic floor. So much so that my tailbone was being pulled out of alignment as a result.

Through massage, holds, breath work, and stretching she was helped me take my pain from a 7 on a 1-10 scale to a 1 in only a few weeks. I wasn’t able to sit on my tailbone for 12 weeks - even nursing my baby I would lay down. Now, I can sit on hard surfaces without pain. Like many women, I wish this kind of care and treatment was part of standard postpartum care. It’s made a huge difference for me and thousands of other women.

My next goal is to be able to run again. We’re now working to strengthen my core and pelvic floor so that I can return to running safely and hopefully come out the other side an even better runner than before!

I’ve been so thankful for my Serena shorts during pregnancy and postpartum, but now I can’t wait to use them as I originally designed - as running shorts!
